Today in Chicago
RESISTANCE NEWS: All hell broke out on Fullerton Ave.
We were driving through the North Side this morning, on our way to a planned community rally against ICE, when all hell broke loose out on Fullerton Ave.
Masked ICE thugs were trying to grab people off the street. Community First Alert personnel rushed to the scene, issuing warnings and filming with their video cameras. Drivers, up and down Fullerton (including me), realizing what was going down, began laying on our horns. Some even tried blocking the street with their vehicles to make it difficult for the ICE SUVs to escape with their captives.
Rapid response teams have confirmed sightings of ICE agents in Belmont Cragin, Logan Square, and Hermosa as early as 6:30 a.m. this week.
ICE fled. I don’t know who or how many people they grabbed or where they are being held. We will find out.
We finally got to the rally across from the Home Depot. Federal agents have been targeting locations where day laborers gather, such as the Home Depot on Fullerton Avenue.
Many community members turned out to vent their anger and hear speakers from the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR) and the Logan Square Neighborhood Association (LSNA) call on people to get organized and resist.
A few local pols turned out, including State Rep. Will Guzzardi (39th Dist.), State Senator Graciela Guzmán (20th Dist.), who spoke, and Ald. Jessie Fuentes (26th Ward).
I plan to have some organizers from ICIRR and LSNA on my October 3rd Hitting Left Show.
#RESIST.
