MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — The U.S. is set to mark Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the federal holiday set aside to honor the life of the civil rights icon. But in Alabama and Mississippi, Monday is also Robert E. Lee Day in honor of the Confederate general.

Pope Francis
… said that Donald Trump's plans to deport illegal migrants from the US would be a "disgrace" if they materialized. In another section of the interview, Francis was asked about the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East and said he did not know why making peace was so difficult. "I don't know why... it's as if there was an international drive towards self-destruction.” —BBC

Grace Pai, Director of immigrant rights group AAIJC
It’s understandable for undocumented individuals to feel scared, but there’s no need to panic yet. “[I] want to wait and see what actions [are] taken,” Pai said. “It’s very easy for the administration to say things that instill fear, but it’s different for them to have increased presence out in Chicago.” — WGN
Dave Chappelle on SNL
Chappelle concluded his monologue with this message to Trump:
The presidency is no place for petty people. Donald Trump, I know you watch the show. Man, remember, whether people voted for you or not, they’re all counting on you. Whether they like you or not, they’re all counting on you. The whole world is counting on you. I mean this when I say this: Good luck. Please, do better next time. Please, all of us, do better next time. Do not forget your humanity, and please have empathy for displaced people, whether they’re in the Palisades or Palestine.. — SNL

Tribal Leaders
Elected tribal officials called on Biden to consider Peltier’s release as an act of compassion. At age 80, Peltier has been imprisoned for more than half of his life and suffers from major health issues.
“Our standing in the world as a champion of freedom, justice, and human rights cannot be maintained in a system that allows Leonard Peltier to die in prison.” — Letter to Biden
I posted this an hour before the news of Leonard Peltier's commutation broke. Thank you to the tribal leaders whose letter (posted above) to Biden may have carried some weight. I wish Biden had pardoned Leonard rather than confining him to his home. But it's still an important victory won after years of struggle.
